The color lithographs were printed by H. F. Jütte, Leipzig, on Japanese laid paper. Richard Janthur (born April 12, 1883, in Zerbst; died March 22, 1956, in Berlin) was a German drawing instructor, graphic artist, book illustrator, and painter. Janthur began his artistic career as a painter but later focused primarily on graphic arts and book illustration. His drawing style was influenced by Expressionism. He participated in exhibitions of the Berlin Secession as early as 1911. That same year, Harry Graf Kessler funded a study trip to Greece for him. In 1912, together with Ludwig Meidner and Jacob Steinhardt, he founded the artist group “Die Pathetiker” (“The Pathetics”), which exhibited at the Galerie Der Sturm that same year. Later, he briefly joined the November Group (Novembergruppe) in Berlin and, in 1919, became a member of the Workers’ Council for Art (Arbeitsrat für Kunst). He also engaged in the applied arts and returned to painting in the 1940s. In 1937, as part of the Nazi campaign against “degenerate art,” Janthur’s paintings were confiscated from the Anhalt Art Gallery in Dessau, the Municipal Museum of Art and Crafts in Dortmund, the Museum of Art and Local History in Erfurt, the art collections of the University of Göttingen, the Kaiser Friedrich Museum in Magdeburg, the Municipal Gallery in Mannheim, and the Museum of Art and Applied Arts in Stettin. Most were destroyed.
